A woeful day for Justin Rose and England

06/27/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Justin Rose had only one goal at the Travelers Championship besides winning. He wanted to play well enough over the first 54 holes to be able to watch the World Cup game between England and Germany on Sunday morning.

With that in mind, Rose built a three-shot lead Saturday to earn a spot in the final pairing and a tee time of 1:55 p.m. (et) -- late enough to catch the game and still have time to warm up.

"Mission accomplished," said the 29-year-old Englishman.

The mission was accomplished on Saturday, for sure, as Rose followed rounds of 64 and 62 with a good-enough 68 that kept his name atop the TPC River Highlands leaderboard for the third straight day.

Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said about Rose -- or his English side in South Africa -- on flim-flam Sunday that veered wildly off-course and went to crap.

First, England was shellacked, 4-1, by the Germans in a game that featured a controversial no-goal for the English. It was England's worst loss ever at the World Cup, a cold splash of water to the face delivered by a hated European rival.

"Back to a real game: golf," tweeted Rose's close friend and fellow Englishman, Ian Poulter, a soccer fanatic who was taking the week off from his own sport.

But there was only more hardship ahead.

Rose shot his worst round in three months, an unthinkable five-over 75 on Sunday afternoon to finish three shots out of a playoff that was eventually won by Bubba Watson, who captured his first PGA Tour title over Corey Pavin and Scott Verplank.

Like the English soccer team before him, Rose's day also included a cold splash of water: his dunked shot at the 15th hole that led to a double-bogey. He followed that with a bogey at the 16th, where he missed a very short putt to all but end his chances.

"It's hard to play golf when you feel like you're going to miss every putt from two feet," Rose said. "I was just that uncomfortable on the greens all day."

Rose was chasing his second-straight victory after beating Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and everybody else to win the Memorial Tournament on June 6, his last start.

That victory -- Rose's first-ever on the PGA Tour -- should have sent him to Pebble Beach for the U.S. Open, riding a wave of momentum bigger than any swell in Carmel Bay.

But Rose didn't fit into any of the 19 USGA categories for inclusion. He climbed from 66th to 33rd in the world rankings, but the deadline to qualify as a top-50 player had already passed. And he didn't make it through a tough qualifier the day after his win at Memorial.

First, that injustice. Then, his collapse on Sunday at the Travelers, where he could only muster one birdie in the final round -- and not until the 13th hole.

"I haven't played a bad round of golf and ... you gotta accept there is one coming," said Rose. "Unfortunately for me it was on Sunday this week."

But don't feel sorry for Justin Rose. He's made more than $2 million playing golf this season and there will be other U.S. Opens. If he keeps playing the way he's playing, he won't have to worry about qualifying next year.

And don't feel sorry for England, either. It landed winners on the European Tour and the European Senior Tour on Sunday.

What? It's something.
