Lazio fan dies as violence in Italy continues

11/11/2007 - Rome, Italy (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Gabriele Sandri, a 25-year-old Lazio fan was shot and killed by a policeman on Sunday as rival fans clashed, which set off violence and protests outside of stadiums and police stations.

According to police, the shooting was accidental, and occurred when Lazio and Juventus supporters were fighting at a restaurant.

Vincenzo Giacobbe, the police in chief in Arezzo, where the incident took place said in a statement, "It was a tragic error. Our agent intervened to prevent the scuffles between two small groups of people from degenerating. "I express my deep grief and sincere condolences to the family of the victim."

According to police, Sandri was inside a car full of Lazio fans when an officer opened fire to stop the fights. The officer said that he fired up into the air, but the situation will now be left up to investigators.

The incident set off a series of events around Italy that disrupted the normal Sunday soccer schedule. Lazio's contest with Inter Milan was postponed, while AC Milan's game at Atalanta was suspended after less than 10 minutes because Atalanta supporters were attempting to break down a glass barrier that kept them off the field.

The other five games were started 10 minutes late, but were able to be completed.
